5 top tips to achieve clear skin

back to articles

Having clear skin and a glowing complexion is part of being healthy. The Western diet has seen a dramatic increase in two things in recent years; refined carbohydrates and sugar. There has also been an increase in the incidence of acne. Refined carbohydrates and sugar can create unwanted inflammation in the body. Pair that with deep-fried foods which cause excess sebum production and what do you get? Clogged pores and acne!

There are so many different foods you can integrate into your diet which can make a huge difference to your complexion. So if you're having issues with your skin, or simply want that natural glow, here are our top 5 superfoods we like to incorporate into our routine to keep us loving the skin we're in.

Avocado

We have all seen avocado used as face masks… but let’s face it, it's not as glamorous as it seems and plus, who wants to waste that lovely avo by putting it on your skin! The good news is, you don't actually have to coat your skin with the stuff; you can eat it for the same effect.

Avocados are rich in Vitamin E which helps fight the acne causing bacteria (P. acnes) as well as reducing the appearance of acne scars. The healthy fats found in the avocado also moisturise the skin, which in turn help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. So, if it's that dewy complexion you're after then you should definitely start adding some guac to your lunch (plus it tastes amazing so you would be crazy not to!). Oh, and did we mention it's also great for your brain?

Cacao

The name cacao comes from the Theobroma Cacao tree from which Cacao (cu-cow) comes. Cacao itself is basically cocoa (the stuff that gives chocolate its chocolatey goodness) in its raw form, before all the processing has taken place. But I thought chocolate was bad for your skin? We hear you. But it's actually the sugar and milk added to cocoa during production of chocolate which are the pesky culprits.

So why cacao and not cocoa?  Well, cacao is heated to high temperatures to eventually produce cocoa but in doing so it's plethora of health benefits, including its anti-inflammatory properties, are dramatically reduced. So head to the health food aisle to invest in the raw stuff rather than the baking section for the processed cocoa.

With 40x the antioxidant power of blueberries, more calcium than cows milk and natural mood elevating properties, cacao is your skin’s new best friend. So go ahead, have chocolate for breakfast, just make sure it's in the form of cacao! We promise you won’t be disappointed. Try adding a tablespoon to your porridge or smoothie for a chocolatey hit in the morning. Stay tuned for more recipes involving cacao ‘cos we love the stuff!

Turmeric

If you're into the health scene then the chances are you've heard the buzz about all things turmeric. Think lattes, teas and even shots. But the buzz  didn't appear out of nowhere. This spice has been used in India for thousands of years and its skin healing properties are legendary.

Turmeric is a herbaceous root related to ginger and is famous for its bright yellow colour. You know that almost fluorescent colour you see in curries? That's thanks to the magic healing ingredient know as 'curcumin' which is found in turmeric.

Curcumin has anti-pretty much everything.. antiseptic, antiviral, anti inflammatory, you name it, it's probably in there. It's these properties that make it super powerful in giving your skin that glow and helping to reduce acne      lesions. Research has shown that turmeric works by inhibiting inflammation signals in the gut, so don't be shy.. add it to everythaaang!! We personally love adding it to our scrambled eggs or making it into a latte with cinnamon and coconut milk. Yum.

Spinach

There had to be one leafy green on the list because they are all really fantastic for you. If you don't like the taste of spinach there are plenty of other greens which reap the same benefits for you're health, but our personal fave is spinach! You can easily blend it into your morning smoothie and you won’t even realise it’s there, we promise. Try combining it with banana.

Rich in Vitamin A, K and folate as well as beta carotenes and Vitamin C it's fab at helping to repair your skin cells and as a result reducing acne lesions and fine lines (Vitamin C aids collagen production and collagen production means repair). Plus, it’s full of water, which is like liquid gold for your complexion.

With its myriad health benefits you should start loading up on the green stuff asap. You won’t be sorry.

Lemon

Start your day right with a lemon and hot water. We're sure you've heard about this trend before and we love it too. However, make sure to drink it through a straw so you don't damage the enamel on your nashers! Lemon is great at detoxifying the body and thanks to the antioxidants found in this citrus fruit, it helps fight off the damage caused by free radicals which in turn keeps your skin glowing.

Like spinach, it helps the body produce collagen which can smooth out any fine lines which may have crept their way onto your face as you age.

The Vitamin C found in lemon stimulates white blood cell production, this boosts your immunity and helps protect your cells from oxidative stress. As oxidative stress equals aging we definitely want to protect ourselves from it. So incorporate a little more lemon in your life and your skin will thank you in the long run! We love to use it as a salad dressing or pair it with some ginger and warm water for a health kick first thing in the morning.

So make it count!
